Career in Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE)

Electronics and Communications Engineering

Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) is a popular branch among student community and is the second generation of branches which emerged from Electrical branch. As it was only Mechanical, Civil and Electrical branches during the nascent stages many branches off shooted from these basic branches as the advancement happened after industrial revolution and especially after world wars. These wars created need for sophisticated weapons and advanced communication to stay ahead of other countries. As the demand for consumer electronics is increasing every day the demand for skilled ECE candidates is also increasing exponentially. There is a huge demand in the defence sector as well since most of the countries are moving towards electronics war fare.

Satellites have become so important that for every small thing we need support their assistance, though the common man cannot see directly these things. Equipment’s like switches, routers, fiber optics, telecommunications transmitters and receivers, electronic switching systems and processors continuously needs up-gradation and only ece engineers can make it happen. With respect to communications we have already moved from 2G to 3G already and slowly moving towards 4G but the path to 5G will be much faster. As a matter of fact our country is still dependent for technology know how on countries like Japan, Korea, Philippines, US and European countries. It’s time for grooming ece engineers indigenously, become self-sufficient and also simultaneously establish in this field ourselves by utilizing full potential by stopping brain drain.

Research and Development is one key area where our country needs to concentrate and develop our own products which are of world class. There is need for more institutions like ISRO, DRDO and BEL to be established in the coming days to fulfill the needs of the ever demanding defence needs. More students go for ece admissions compared to other branches is because they get the flexibility to either stay back in the core field or shift to IT. Students who are skilled in VLSI, embedded technologies and image processing are in huge demand provided they are strong in the basics and have done some projects to exhibit their talent. As the number of vacancies in core electronics field is limited since it is product based and not service based, only students with high potential are able to make to this niche field. Most of the developed countries have established their R&D centres in India to develop new products which goes to show that we have enough potential to grow big in this field.
