Mechanical Engineering - Is It A Promising Career?

Mechanical Engineering

Some engineers always keep looking out to make some invention to better the life of humans, and mechanical engineers are one of them. Beauty of this branch is students get to explore many things after their under graduation. A student of mechanical engineering can choose to become automobile engineer, aeronautical engineer, metallurgist, analyst, software engineer, design engineering with some training or a post-graduation degree. Generally mechanical engineers are more versatile than any other engineers and can quickly learn and adapt to the situation.

They can join manufacturing firms like Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Bosch Limited, L&T, HMT Machine Tools Limited, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bharath Earth Movers Ltd., (BEML) as Project Engineer, Production Engineer, Graduate Engineer Trainee etc. Those who are interested in research field can join, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) they can get into Indian Air Force and Indian Navy as Technical Officers, Engineers etc. Opportunities exist in private companies and MNC like Ashok Leyland, TVS Motors, Hitachi, Toyota Motors, Hyundai Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Makino, Toyoda and so on.

Career in mechanical engineering is very promising since the opportunities are of wide spectrum and demand for skilled engineers always exists. Apart from the theory knowledge students also should get experience through internships and projects during their college days. As the industry is moving away from manual to automated, students need to upgrade the designing, drafting, analysis skills also. Other than general skills students with additional knowledge of tool and die making, software programming, six sigma certification, automation tools have upper hand during interviews. Since the variety of jobs which mechanical engineers can is humongous, the same applies to what they need to learn and equip them for the fast moving technological advanced situation.

It is very hard to find an industry or an organization where mechanical engineers cannot fit starting from software to aviation and marine to automobile. Students who would like to purse higher education in India, all IIT’s and IISc are the places to look for other than private universities. In Europe and USA students have more specialized branches to choose for their masters’ degree since the education is more focused there rather than generic as in India.
