Career Opportunities for Electrical & Electronics Engineers

Electrical & Electronics Engineering

Electrical & Electronics Engineering is one of the premier branches of engineering along with civil and mechanical. It is one of the most interesting branches of engineering which involves study of how electricity is generated through various systems and about transmission and distribution of the same. Electricity is a crucial part for any technological developments without which most of the things won’t work. Electrical engineers are in huge demand in all places around globe as power is required in all parts of world. Latest research is on how to generate power economically which is also green.

While power generation is one part of business with huge infrastructure investments, transmission and distribution (T&D) space includes the follow up “post-power generation production” as systems and grids are kept in place to transport the generated power to end users which provides huge employment opportunities. As per recent survey T&D losses in India is around 22% and it is less than 5% in countries like Japan, Germany, Singapore and few more developed countries.

As electricity is generated through various sources, students can find jobs in all the following places:
  • Hydroelectric power stations
  • Wind power
  • Nuclear power plant
  • Biomass power generation plant
  • Solar Cells
  • Geothermal plants
  • Thermal Plants
Career Opportunities for Electrical & Electronics Engineers

There are plenty of job opportunities in both public and private sector as like civil aviation, railway, electricity boards in all the state and utility companies, and all sorts of manufacturing industries. As the number of engineering colleges has increased across India, candidates with decent academic record and communication skills are also in demand where they have opportunity to teach and pursue research.

Companies like Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), ABB, Siemens Ltd, Reliance Power Ltd, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) and Indian Railways are few big employers hiring Electrical Engineers. A top rank in GATE Exam opens opportunities to join IOCL, NTPC, ONGC, NLC, PGCIL, BPCL and other Maha Ratnas, Nava Ratnas PSU where the pay package is in par with private sector with lot of other facilities.

Students interested in pursuing research at government bodies  have option of joining premier institutions like CSIR, CPRI, IGCAR, DRDO, ISRO, etc. As power has many applications, some fortunate electrical engineers can make it to fortune companies like Boeing, IBM, Google, Apple, General Electric, Shell Oil Company, BMW and so on in helping them to design and test few high end equipment's.
