Career in engineering is exiting and thrilling for people to really love their job and wants to achieve great things during their life time which may exist beyond them. Temples and pyramids were built thousands of years ago when the word engineer might hot have existed but still a testimony of the skills which our ancestors had. Though engineers had less scope in earlier days due to lack of awareness they were able to achieve great things. Now we have so many disciplines in engineering and everybody is in demand as the progress has happened. Everything which moves on earth created by humans is a standing example of engineers. Demand for skilled engineers is increasing year on year as we are moving towards technological advancement in every area. To quote a few roles that are familiar are Aerospace Engineer, Automotive Engineer, Chemical Engineer, Civil Engineer, Design Engineer, Software Engineer, Hardware Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, etc.,

Opportunities exist in abundance for all sorts of engineers irrespective of discipline. Engineers innovate and increase the quality of life and help everyone to lead a comfortable living. Engineers are the ones who make great countries. Countries with engineers who have wisdom drive the economy of their country for instance, automobile and electronics engineers of Japan drive the whole economy of their country. Software, space research and defence equipment’s are the major contributors for the economy of USA. Likewise all countries are driven by engineers who make their country proud and also contribute to the overall growth of their country.

Nuclear and petroleum engineering grads boast the highest median salaries, in the $126,000 to $129,000 range, according to the NSPE's latest salary survey and Civil engineers make average about $55,000. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) divides the software engineering profession into systems software engineering and applications software engineering. The estimated median annual wage for systems software engineers was $96,000 and the top performers based on technologies they work on can earn up to $140,000 per year.

No need to mention specifically that engineers from all disciplines are highly sought after by Government, Private, Public Sector, Defence sectors, Research & Development organizations. Aerospace Engineering - Scope and Career Prospects

Aerospace Engineering

Careers in engineering is becoming competitive in recent days as there are so many specializations in each discipline of engineering who can best fit for specific requirements. Fresh aerospace engineers never had so many choices where one could choose what they want. All the engineers used to executive similar kind of work and only few top could get into research and development as the technology was not so advanced till few years back. As the industry is expanding its base and advancement is happening new profiles are being created to suit the various requirements in product design, manufacturing, testing, quality control, software integration and project management.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is the latest trend in aerospace domain as we see applications of this is heavily used in civil and military. UAVs are of two types, one being remotely piloted and other being autonomous. UAVs come in different size depending upon its application. UAVs are extensively used by defence forces but it is slowly getting into civilian forte also. These vehicles are capable of achieving an altitude of 60K feet and have a range of 22K kms. Research is going on in making these vehicles smaller and more efficient. A drone, in a technological context, is an unmanned aircraft. Drones are popularly known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). As it performs function dynamically or as programmed, a drone can also be called as robot. With so much to offer we see that Aerospace Engineering is one of the world’s most exciting careers which are very rewarding also.

Aerospace is a booming industry as it is reported that companies are working on hybrid-electric aircraft which reduces the emission and also the cost. Innovation has always been the key in the aerospace domain which predominantly focuses on making bigger, efficient, ecofriendly, faster and safe aircrafts. Spectrum of Aerospace engineering career is getting wider as there is dearth of qualified engineers to work in latest technologies adapted in aerospace. Software in this domain is making a buzz as every hardware which gets into the system require this. Embedded and networking software engineers are more in demand as the number of aircrafts and airports are growing. Communication is one more area where industries would be looking out for engineers as they would be required to communicate with ground as well as aircrafts which are in the same zone.

Make Your Career in Aerospace Engineering

aerospace engineering

Aerospace is a multi-disciplinary domain where-in discipline like Mechanical, Computer Science and Electronics are majorly involved. Subject like hydraulics, pneumatics, metallurgy are from Mechanical and Embedded, Control Systems, Digital Signal Processing are from Electronics and the last but not the least software also plays a major role in developing and designing aircraft's and satellites. Boeing and Airbus are the two major civilian aircraft manufacturers. Apart from these two, other major players which are in small and medium size aircraft manufacturing are Bombardier, Cessna Embraer and Dassault.

Companies like Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Rolls-Royce, Williams, SAFRAN, General Electric, BAE Systems and Goodrich Corporation supplies components to these aircraft manufacturers which are very critical in building aircraft's. Boeing and Airbus apart from being leaders in civilian aircraft manufacturing they are also leaders in defence supplies. Other major players are Lockheed Martin, United Technologies Corporation, General Dynamics Corporation and BAE Systems. Most of the above mentioned companies have their offices either in USA or Europe and few of them have offices in India also. Jain University offers B.Tech-Aerospace engineering and is one of the best aerospace engineering colleges in Bangalore. Students from branches as mentioned above apart from aerospace also get a chance to work in any of these companies provided they have done good projects and prepare themselves well as per the specific requirements in any of their division. Students need to possess and exhibit extraordinary skills to get selected in these companies as the opportunities are limited unlike IT companies.

As quoted by Sir J.M.Barrie, a renowned novelist, “The reason birds can fly and we can't is simply because they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings”, students who want to excel in aerospace domain need to have resilient passion about the subject.

Career in VLSI Domain for Electronics & Communication Engineers

Electronics & Communication engineering
Electronics & Communication engineers who have deep knowledge in Very-large-scale integration (VLSI) are highly sought after by product development companies in India and abroad. People who seek opportunity in this field need to be highly skilled as they have to design chips with maximum number of transistors. The more numbers of transistors you can plug in, the more number of functions you can achieve. In early 60’s the low density fabrication processes classified under Small Scale Integration in which transistor count was limited to about 10. As a result of continuous miniaturization the number of transistor count in a single chip is increasing very fast. Transistors are becoming smaller, faster and consume less power and also its getting cheaper to manufacture due to advancement of technology. Scaling down cannot go on forever because transistors cannot be smaller than atoms.

Texas Instruments (TI), USA may be termed as pioneer in this field as they began their journey in early 50’s and have grown along with the technology, also the leader since then. Analog Devices, USA started their business little late when compared to TI but they also a huge market share. The above two companies along with Intel, Qualcomm, NVIDIA and ARM are other major companies in VLSI domain.  Though indirectly India is contributing to this field, we do not have any indigenous company which could make an impact and manufacture its own products till date.

Candidates with following skills and attributes can make great rewarding career in VLSI domain
  • Excellent basics and fundamentals
  • CMOS Design
  • Timing concepts
  • Combinational Circuit Concepts
  • Scripting and Strong programming knowledge
  • Short term courses to enhance skills

Career in Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE)

Electronics and Communications Engineering

Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) is a popular branch among student community and is the second generation of branches which emerged from Electrical branch. As it was only Mechanical, Civil and Electrical branches during the nascent stages many branches off shooted from these basic branches as the advancement happened after industrial revolution and especially after world wars. These wars created need for sophisticated weapons and advanced communication to stay ahead of other countries. As the demand for consumer electronics is increasing every day the demand for skilled ECE candidates is also increasing exponentially. There is a huge demand in the defence sector as well since most of the countries are moving towards electronics war fare.

Satellites have become so important that for every small thing we need support their assistance, though the common man cannot see directly these things. Equipment’s like switches, routers, fiber optics, telecommunications transmitters and receivers, electronic switching systems and processors continuously needs up-gradation and only ece engineers can make it happen. With respect to communications we have already moved from 2G to 3G already and slowly moving towards 4G but the path to 5G will be much faster. As a matter of fact our country is still dependent for technology know how on countries like Japan, Korea, Philippines, US and European countries. It’s time for grooming ece engineers indigenously, become self-sufficient and also simultaneously establish in this field ourselves by utilizing full potential by stopping brain drain.

Research and Development is one key area where our country needs to concentrate and develop our own products which are of world class. There is need for more institutions like ISRO, DRDO and BEL to be established in the coming days to fulfill the needs of the ever demanding defence needs. More students go for ece admissions compared to other branches is because they get the flexibility to either stay back in the core field or shift to IT. Students who are skilled in VLSI, embedded technologies and image processing are in huge demand provided they are strong in the basics and have done some projects to exhibit their talent. As the number of vacancies in core electronics field is limited since it is product based and not service based, only students with high potential are able to make to this niche field. Most of the developed countries have established their R&D centres in India to develop new products which goes to show that we have enough potential to grow big in this field.
